THE STORY BEHIND THE CHARITY

ABOUT CHILDCAN

Since 1974, Childcan has provided responsive and compassionate support services for families living in Southwestern Ontario and facing the challenging journey through childhood cancer - from diagnosis, through treatment, to recovery or bereavement. One of Childcan’s goals is to relieve families of everyday financial burdens to allow them to focus on their child's care and treatment.

Childcan founders, parent David Cohen and Dr. L.L. Barrie de Veber, Immunologist/Oncologist, knew first-hand about the hardships facing families when children were diagnosed with cancer.  Dr. de Veber and Mr. Cohen understood that these parents and children had needs that weren’t being met; financial, emotional and social support resources were not readily available. In 1974, the need and a late night conversation began a proud history of support that continues today. Many years later that need for support has not changed!

Childcan is a registered Canadian charity based in London, Ontario that provides responsive support services for children, and their families, diagnosed with cancer at Children’s Hospital LHSC located in London. Children’s Hospital LHSC is the regional referral centre for Southwestern Ontario so Childcan supports kids and families from throughout the large geographical area LHSC serves.

September 2014 marked the 40th year of operation for Childcan, the Childhood Cancer Research Association, and a proud history of pioneering and support for children and families living with childhood cancer.
